Eastern Shore Residence

This vernacular-inspired home on Virginia’s Eastern Shore in Belle Haven is positioned gracefully on raised wood piles, gently nestled within a serene and lush forested landscape that hugs the waters of the scenic Chesapeake Bay.
As one approaches the residence, we intended for the house to feel “settled” within this quiet and very rural setting, harmonizing with its natural surroundings.
To ameliorate the visual condition of the elevated pile foundation, we positioned a thick stuccoed masonry wall in the foreground, serving as a strong bearing element for one side of the house, while also incorporating a planted earthen berm to further soften and integrate its presence into the landscape.
The north side of the house features expansive full-height windows for optimal ambient light, offering panoramic and glare-free views of the picturesque Craddock Creek. The selected exterior materials comprise horizontal and vertical western red cedar shiplap planks and standing seam metal roofing. Inside, the space is suffused with light and finished in wide plank wood flooring, natural stone, and crisp white painted walls. Tall, lofty ceilings complement the inviting feel of a charming old farmhouse while still embracing a modern sensibility.
